A heritage jaunt
Councillors joined Council officers and heritage consultant RBA Architects and Conservation Consultants on a walk around a small part of Castlemaine to inspect a number of heritage and potential heritage sites.
The activity forms part of the consultation underway for the Castlemaine Heritage Study, as we work towards an updated heritage study for Castlemaine, including the first stage of a heritage gap analysis.
The walk began at the Civic Centre in Lyttleton Street and included parts of Hargraves Street, Doveton Street, and Berkeley Street.
Topics covered on the walk included the current Castlemaine Central Conservation Area (covered by the existing Heritage Overlay), and examples of new development within this precinct that respect the heritage context. Attention was drawn to some areas/sites within Castlemaine that may have heritage significance but are not covered by the Heritage Overlay.
The discussion on the walk emphasised that heritage protection does not preclude development from occurring but ensures that development and change is managed appropriately into the future.
