Community Waste Reference Group members have been appointed.
Thank you to the residents who expressed their interest in joining the newly formed Community Waste Reference Group (CWRG). Following an evaluation process, a diverse and passionate group of seven people were selected to establish the renewed community group.
We thank the following community members who have been selected:
- Bill Grant
- Giselle Maurice
- Jeannette Martin
- Kirk Warren
- Lucy Young
- Maria Angeloni
- Melissa Van de wow
The Group first met on 28 August in Castlemaine with the focus being on introductions, the terms of reference of the group and its representative role for the wider community.
Waste management priorities for the community were discussed as well as the planned changes coming from 1 July 2027, where all households in the Shire within an existing waste and recycling collection service will have the service expanded to include the collection of food scraps and garden waste and glass bottles and jars.
The group will meet on a quarterly basis, with the possibility for more frequent gatherings. The group is chaired by the Deputy Mayor Cr Toby Heydon.

Expressions of Interest closed at 5.00pm, Monday 23 June 2025.
This CWRG is designed as an advisory group. Council will coordinate the group, and selected members will have the opportunity to participate in a structured forum, acting as advisors and representatives of the wider community.
Whilst the decision making function sits with Council, the importance of the group includes:
- Providing a forum for members to discuss issues of community interest and influence outcomes for the benefit of the community in relation to project objectives
- Drawing on local knowledge to help decision making processes and outcomes
- Building community understanding of Council’s core business functions and specific projects.
The purpose of the Community Waste Reference Group is to advise the Mount Alexander Shire Council on a range of community issues involved in the development and implementation of future waste management services in the municipality.
