Future use of the former Wesleyan Church

Calling for community voice!

Mount Alexander Shire Council has completed restoration works on the Wesleyan Church in Chewton and is now seeking community input on its future use.

Located at 205 Main Road, the church was built in the 1850s and has been vacant since 2010. Although Council resolved to sell the building in 2017, strong community advocacy led Councillors to reverse the decision in 2021 and commit to restoring the site. Restoration began in November 2022 and are now complete.

The building sits beside a small community hall, a large green space, and dedicated parking, offering potential for the site to be used as a community precinct. Council is keen to speak with community members about how they think the space could be used.

Community members are invited to share their ideas throughout August as per below:

  • Friday 1 August - Shape page comments board open (on-line, below).
  • Friday 15 August - Listening Post: Mayor Rosie Annear at the Heron Cafe, Chewton (next to the Chewton Post Office), 8am–10am.
  • Saturday 16 August - Listening Post: Councillor Phillip Walker at Wesley Hill Market, 10am–1pm.
  • Saturday 30 August - Community Conversation: Mayor Rosie Annear, Councillor Phillip Walker and Council staff at the Wesleyan Church 12pm – 3pm.

Consultation closes Sunday 31 August 2025

A mix of uses would be ideal - don't lock it up to just one group. All users should pay to contribute to its upkeep and operational costs.
