The proposed speed limit reduction follows a petition from a number of Harcourt community members as well as general community feedback.

The reduction will improve road safety for all road users.

This is the only speed limit change we can make that fits in with the regulated speed zone spacings enforced by the Speed Zoning Guidelines.

Yes. We worked with technical experts including Transport Victoria, with reference to ‘TEM Vol 3 Part 211 Speed Zoning Guidelines Dec 2021’ which defines minimum lengths for speed zones.

The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) is responsible for setting and changing speed limits.

Council can apply to the DTP for changes on local roads after conducting assessments and community consultations, however we are unable to change speed limits ourselves.

At the May Council meeting, Councillors will review the Officer Report, which will summarise key feedback heard from community during the consultation.

At that meeting, Councillors will decide whether or not to write to the Department of Transport to propose a speed limit reduction, and the details of what that reduction might look like.
