Shaping the future of play in Maldon
Mount Alexander Shire Council thanks the community members who expressed their interest in joining the new working group to shape the future of a playground in central Maldon. The working group has been formed, with representatives attending meetings with officers.
Council has allocated $40,000 to develop a concept plan to improve the play area in Maldon Gardens, a beautiful spot that’s popular for families, events and visitors.
The playground was last upgraded in 2014 and includes swings, a climbing frame, a train and more. Now, it’s time to think about what’s next.
A landscape designer has been engaged to undertake the concept plan and has met with the working group. A draft concept plan will be available for community feedback in May.
Background
Background on play spaces in Maldon:
The primary Council-managed play space for Maldon residents is located in Maldon Gardens, which is part of the historic Government Reserve. The public gardens are a peaceful and picturesque spot in the centre of historic Maldon.
The playground is located behind Maldon's Visitor Information Centre on Francis Street. With toilets close by and a covered picnic area with free electric barbecues, this is a great spot for gatherings. The Rotunda within the gardens also hosts many weddings and events.
This District Level play space was replaced and upgraded in 2014 and includes:
- Climbing frame
- Basket swing
- Double swing set
- Train
- Spinner, rocker and tunnel.
Why do we need a working group?
The Working Group will provide a local perspective on the scope of opportunities for improved play in Maldon.
Members will inform the development of a concept plan to improve this important community space. The final output will be a design that Council can use to advocate for funding for construction.
- Monthly meetings for six months, starting in late November 2025
- Meetings will be held during working hours
- A short break is expected over the summer holidays
- You’ll work with Council staff to share ideas and give feedback to help shape the design
The group will be facilitated by Council Officers from the Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities Team.
All expressions of interest will be assessed by the Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities Team in the hope to recruit a cross section of the community that have a linkage to or an interest in play in Maldon
