A new name for Campbells Creek trail

Over the past two years, Council has worked with DJAARA (Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation) and the Friends of Campbells Creek (FOCC) to improve the Campbells Creek Trail.

The 4.3 km off-road trail runs along Campbells Creek, from Campbells Creek Park to Camp Reserve in Castlemaine. These upgrades have made the trail safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

The new name, Watjarang Baring, means “Platypus Track” in the Dja Dja Wurrung language. It celebrates the work of Traditional Owners and FOCC to improve the creek’s health, helping platypus return to the area.

After community consultation, Council approved the name Watjarang Baring at its meeting on 26 March 2026. The name will now be submitted to Geographic Names Victoria for consideration and approval as the official trail name.
