Project Update - July 2025
Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the draft concept plans for the southeast corner of Panmure and Lyons Streets in central Newstead.
The goal was to create a pleasant, welcoming space for people to meet in the heart of town including a bike maintenance station and some bike racks.
After thorough investigation, the site was unfortunately deemed unsuitable for this project activation. Advice received from Department of Transport and Planning and Council’s Engineering Team concluded that additional works, such as a formal kerb and channel, to improve road delineation and pedestrian safety, would be required first.
Unfortunately, these significant civil works are outside the scope of our project budget. These improvements have now been added to Council’s future works program, as funding permits.
Following further consultation with the Newstead Walks and Wheels Committee and the Newstead Community Centre Committee, an alternative site was selected.
It was agreed that Newstead Park would be the most suitable location for the new bike maintenance station. We’re pleased to share that the bike station has now been installed at Newstead Park and is ready for use by the community.

Look back at the 2024 community consultation.
We have worked in partnership with Newstead Walks and Wheels to develop a plan to upgrade the southeast corner of Panmure and Lyons streets in central Newstead. We want to create a pleasant spot to meet in the centre of town.
