In mid-2022 Council conducted a survey to better understand safety concerns around the Mostyn Street Zebra Crossing, and began a trial of smaller carparks in the median strip adjacent to the crossing.

Upgrades to Mostyn Street Zebra Crossing
Over 30 community members took part in the survey from April – September 2022.
Visibility emerged as a key area of concern, especially in regards to children and people in mobility vehicles crossing from north to south.
Nearly 40% of respondents agreed smaller carparks increased sightlines for pedestrians and motorists.
Some participants expressed concern that large vehicles would continue to use the smaller parking bays, but just one instance of non-compliance was reported out of 11 audits throughout the trial.
Survey participants had three key suggestions to increase safety:
As well as the trial and survey, we have also considered:
- Local traffic data, road accident data from VicRoads, and relevant state and federal design standards
- Growing demand from local businesses for more car parking
- External funding needed to support any major upgrades to the crossing.
Based on all of this information Council’s Engineering team will retain the two smaller car parks and install approach line-marking treatments and additional signage to raise pedestrian and motorist awareness of the crossing.
The additional line-marking and signage will be funded from existing budget and are expected to be installed before increased pedestrian numbers due to warmer weather, daylight savings and the festive season.
Further improvements may be considered in the future subject to available funding.
